When the System Blinks… Very Slowly

The Comfort of Obvious Failure

We are good at responding to clear breakdowns. Servers go down. Markets crash. Bridges collapse. Someone pulls the plug and everyone agrees: this is a problem.

Obvious failure gives us permission to act.

Catching the Blink

The first sign of real system health isn’t speed—it’s responsiveness.

Healthy systems notice when they’re hesitating.
They shorten feedback loops.
They treat small delays as signals, not noise.

Most importantly, they listen to the people who feel the lag first—because those people are always the canaries.

When someone says, “It’s not broken, but something feels off,” that’s not a vibe check. That’s diagnostics.

Before the Eyes Close

A system that blinks slowly is deciding whether to stay awake.

If you catch it early, you can recalibrate. Refactor. Rethink.
