Report: Platner said US soldier didn’t deserve to survive Afghanistan attack on Reddit

HUNT VALLEY, Md. (TNND) — Graham Platner, the presumptive Democratic nominee in Maine’s U.S. Senate race, reportedly said in a 2019 Reddit post that an American solider didn’t deserve to survive an attack during the war in Afghanistan.
The post, one of more than 2,000 that The Maine Monitor news outlet has linked to Platner, expresses frustration with a soldier targeted by a shooter. The video showing the attack, which was carried out by an unknown enemy, is no longer available. It’s also unclear who exactly the American servicemember is.
“This video never gets old. Dumb motherfuc*er didn’t deserve to live,” Platner reportedly wrote. “At least his stupidity and fat ass wheezing are available for all future infantrymen to witness and hold in contempt.”
Fox News earlier reported on the post. The National News Desk requested comment from Platner’s campaign team but hasn’t received a response.
The candidate, who served in the Marine Corps and Army in the early 2000s, reportedly added in his post that the American soldier made “every possible sh*t decision possible” in small unit combat.
“Poor marksmanship on the Taliban’s part is the only reason this mouthbreather made it home,” Platner wrote, according to The Maine Monitor.
His social media posts over the past many years have surfaced as he advances in the Senate race. He called white, rural people racist, insulted police and took an apathetic tone toward sexual crime victims in several posts after tours in Afghanistan and Iraq.
Platner has apologized for those and other comments, saying last fall that he had mental health issues following his deployments.
“While I won’t defend things I said in the past, I will just say that if it wasn’t for that entire journey, I would not be who I am today, and I’m incredibly proud of who I am today,” Platner said in an October video message. “And so, for those of you who have read these things and been offended, have read these things and seen someone that you don’t recognize, I am deeply sorry.”
The candidate’s struggles have yet to materialize in the polls. He is leading his primary opponents in several surveys and can secure the Democratic nomination next month.
Platner would then face Senator Susan Collins, the Republican incumbent, in the general election. She has fended off Democratic challenges for decades, although her chances at keeping her seat may worsen as the war with Iran continues. The party not in power has historically had better odds in midterm elections, and President Donald Trump’s insistence on continuing the conflict has grown increasingly unpopular among voters.
